The trends and future states of mining world café
Looking at the future of the mining industry through a social innovation lens.
RIIS facilitated the social innovation focused world café on behalf of a client seeking to help improve the collaboration of the mining industry between the government, industry and community. The world café for mining innovation discussed people-centred innovation and social innovation within the South African mining industry with industry stakeholders.
A world café is a workshop method that facilitates problem-solving with experts over ‘café like’ discussions. The discussions are based on challenges and opportunities that are most important to the participants. This enables greater participation and richer insights for the participants to explore.
The world café was held as an effort to discuss the state of mining innovation and the innovation challenges in the industry through a social innovation lens. The world café worked as a platform to highlight and explore the role of innovation and social innovation within the industry. It, therefore, gave a point of departure for further efforts to improve the state of innovation.
The world café used a method called persona mapping; the participants described a persona and engaged empathetically from that persona’s point of view, allowing participants to think objectively rather than subjectively.
The evaluation of the world café also identified possible key decisions and recommendations that must be implemented to drive social innovation through the mining industry.
RIIS continues to work closely with the client to set and achieve objectives that will result in the genuine improvement of the mining industry through a social innovation lens.
