Strategic roadmapping in the SA mining industry

What are the major risks that a South African mining firm will need to navigate over the medium- and long-term?

Our client, a major player in the SA mining industry, needed to understand how ongoing technological and social disruptions will impact on the industry, and by extension, how a mine can operate effectively in the South African environment.

The questions to be asked are therefore more about what deep, inevitable trends are likely to continue – trends such as continued urbanisation, political volatility, and the change in economic poles around the world.

Our work therefore focused not on predicting the future, but rather providing a series of lenses through which events can be analysed. This enabled our client to begin developing a long term strategic risk management framework; such a framework empowers them to make decisions around business resilience and viability on an ongoing basis, without needing dramatic strategic re-positioning.
